Your Website Has Stopped Getting Enquiries — Here Is Why and How to Fix It

Most service businesses that come to us have the same story. The website launched, a few enquiries came in, and then at some point the phone stopped ringing and the contact form went silent. Nothing obvious changed. No big decisions were made. The website just quietly stopped working. If your website is no longer getting enquiries, you are not alone and you are not imagining it. Something has shifted, and the good news is that these problems are almost always diagnosable and fixable.

This post walks through the most common culprits we see when we audit websites that have gone quiet, and what you should do about each one.

The Traffic Has Dropped and You Did Not Notice

The first thing to check is whether people are still finding your website at all. A drop in enquiries is often a drop in traffic wearing a disguise.

Google updates its search algorithm hundreds of times a year, and some of those updates are significant. If your website was ranking well on the strength of older SEO techniques, a core update may have quietly pushed you down the results page without any notification. Competitors who have invested in content and technical SEO will have moved above you.

Log into Google Search Console. Look at your impressions and clicks over the past 12 months. If you see a cliff edge at a specific date, that is your answer. You have been hit by an algorithm update or outranked by a competitor who has done the work.

The fix here is not a quick one, but it is straightforward. You need to improve the quality and relevance of your content, earn better backlinks, and make sure your technical foundations are solid. This is an ongoing process, not a one-time task.

Your Design Has Not Kept Up With Expectations

There is a version of your website that felt modern in 2018. In 2024, that same website is telling visitors you are behind the times before they have read a single word.

First impressions happen in milliseconds. Research consistently shows that visitors form a judgement about a website almost instantly, and that judgement influences whether they stay or leave. If your site looks dated, uses stock photos from a decade ago, or has a layout that does not adjust properly on a mobile phone, you are losing people before they ever reach your contact details.

This matters more than most business owners realise. A significant proportion of web traffic now comes from mobile devices, and Google ranks websites based on their mobile experience first. A site that works perfectly on a desktop but breaks on a phone is actively being penalised in search results and actively losing the visitors who do land on it.

The fix is a proper redesign or at minimum a refresh. This does not mean spending money for the sake of it. It means ensuring your website matches the standard visitors expect when they land on it from a search result in your industry.

Your Contact Form Is Broken

This one sounds too simple to be a real problem. It is one of the most common problems we find when auditing websites.

Forms break. Plugins become incompatible after an update. Spam filters start swallowing submissions. Email hosting changes and the inbox the form was sending to no longer exists. Business owners do not notice because nobody tells them.

Go and fill in your own contact form right now. Use a personal email address. See if you receive the submission. If you do not, you have found your problem and you need to fix it today.

While you are at it, check that the form itself is not asking for too much information. Every additional field you add reduces the number of people who complete it. Name, email, phone, and a brief message is almost always enough to start a conversation.

Your Website Is Loading Too Slowly

Page speed is not a technical vanity metric. It is a direct factor in both your Google ranking and your conversion rate. A website that takes more than three seconds to load will lose a significant portion of its visitors before the page even appears.

Slow websites are usually caused by a combination of uncompressed images, bloated plugins, cheap shared hosting, and code that has not been maintained. Every year that passes without attention, a website tends to accumulate more of these problems.

Run your website through Google PageSpeed Insights. It is free and it will tell you exactly what is slowing you down. Some of the fixes are simple, like compressing images. Others require a developer. Either way, the investment in speed improvements tends to pay for itself quickly in better rankings and lower bounce rates.

Your Trust Signals Have Eroded

When someone lands on your website considering whether to hand you their money or trust you with their business, they are looking for reasons to feel confident. These reasons are called trust signals, and they have a shelf life.

A testimonial from 2019 does not reassure a visitor in the same way a recent one does. An accreditation badge that has expired does the opposite of building trust. A blog that has not been updated in two years suggests a business that may not still be operating. A team page with people who no longer work there creates doubt.

Audit your trust signals. Update your testimonials. Add recent case studies if you have them. Make sure any badges or certifications are current. Check that your About page reflects where your business actually is today. These are small changes that have a measurable impact on whether someone picks up the phone.

You Are Attracting the Wrong Traffic

Sometimes the problem is not that visitors are leaving without enquiring. The problem is that the visitors arriving are never going to enquire, because they are the wrong people entirely.

This happens when your SEO has optimised for broad or informational keywords rather than commercial ones. You might be ranking well for terms that bring in people doing research rather than people ready to buy. Your traffic looks fine in Google Analytics but the enquiries never materialise.

Look at which pages are getting traffic and what keywords are driving it. If the pages that rank are blog posts answering general questions rather than service pages targeting buyers in your area or industry, your SEO strategy needs to be reoriented. You want to be visible at the point when someone is ready to make a decision, not just when they are starting to learn.

Increased Competition Has Quietly Overtaken You

The market does not stand still. Competitors who were not online a few years ago now have polished websites, Google Business profiles, and active review pages. New businesses have entered your space specifically targeting the keywords you used to own.

This is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to take stock. Search your primary service and location in Google as if you were a potential customer. Look at every result on page one. What are those businesses doing that you are not? Where are they stronger? What gaps exist that you could fill?

The answer to competition is not always to do more. Sometimes it is to do what you already do, better. Better copy that speaks directly to the right customer. Better social proof. A clearer offer. A faster, cleaner experience from the search result to the contact form.

How Salter Socials Approaches This

When a business comes to us because their website has gone quiet, we start with a proper audit rather than assumptions. We look at the technical health of the site, the quality of the traffic, the conversion rate of key pages, the strength of the trust signals, and the performance of any lead capture mechanisms.

In most cases, the problems are fixable. Sometimes a rebuild is the right answer. Sometimes targeted improvements to the existing site are enough. Sometimes the website is fine and the issue is the absence of a lead generation system sitting behind it to capture and nurture the people who do visit.

What we do not do is recommend solutions before we understand the problem. Every business is different, and a fix that works for a national e-commerce brand will not necessarily be the right move for a local trades business or a professional services firm.

The Longer You Leave It, the Further You Fall

A website that is not performing rarely recovers on its own. The gap between your position and page one does not close by itself. Competitors continue to improve. Traffic continues to go elsewhere. The quiet period gets longer.

If your website is no longer getting enquiries and you want to understand exactly why, we offer a free audit that covers the most common points of failure. No obligation, no jargon, just a clear picture of what is happening and what would make the biggest difference.
