Why Your Website Is Not Getting Enquiries (And What to Fix First)

Most business owners who come to us have the same story. They paid someone to build a website, it looks decent enough, and they assumed the enquiries would follow. Months later, the phone is quiet and the contact form has never once pinged. If you are sitting there asking why is my website not getting enquiries, you are not alone and the answer is almost never what people expect.

The website is rarely broken in an obvious way. It loads. The pages are there. The phone number is somewhere at the top. But there are usually four or five specific things quietly killing your conversion rate, and most of them are completely fixable.

This post walks through the most common culprits, in the order we would address them.

Your Website Fails on Mobile Before Anyone Reads a Word

The first thing we check when a client says their website is not converting is how it performs on a mobile device. Not a desktop. Not a laptop. A phone.

The majority of web traffic in the UK now comes from mobile users. If your site takes more than three seconds to load on a phone, or if the text is too small to read without zooming, or if the contact button requires scrolling past five paragraphs to find, most visitors will leave before they have made any kind of decision about you.

Google also penalises slow, mobile-unfriendly websites in search rankings, which means poor mobile performance is costing you both traffic and conversions at the same time. It is a double loss.

The fix here is not always a full redesign. Sometimes it is compressing images, fixing layout issues on smaller screens, or restructuring how the page stacks on mobile. But it has to be addressed before anything else, because there is no point optimising your copy or your forms if nobody is staying long enough to read them.

At Salter Socials, every website we build is designed mobile-first. That means the mobile experience is the starting point, not an afterthought bolted on at the end.

Your Page Speed Is Costing You Enquiries You Will Never Know About

Page speed and mobile performance are related but they are not the same thing. A website can be technically mobile-responsive and still be painfully slow.

Research consistently shows that even a one-second delay in page load time can significantly reduce conversions. Visitors do not wait. They have no reason to. If your competitor's site loads in two seconds and yours takes six, they are getting the enquiry and you are not.

Common speed killers include oversized image files, bloated website themes loaded with features you are not using, too many third-party scripts running in the background, and cheap hosting that cannot handle even modest traffic.

You can test your own site right now using Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool. If you are scoring below 70 on mobile, that is a problem worth taking seriously.

A slow website does not just lose enquiries. It signals to the visitor that you are not a business that pays attention to detail. First impressions happen fast, and your load speed is part of that impression.

Your Copy Talks About You Instead of the Person Reading It

This is the one that surprises people the most. They read their own website and it sounds fine to them. Of course it does. They wrote it.

But there is a fundamental difference between copy that describes your business and copy that speaks directly to the problem your visitor is trying to solve. Most business websites are full of the former and short on the latter.

Here is a simple test. Read your homepage headline and ask: does this tell a visitor what they will get, or does it just say what you do?

"Welcome to Smith Plumbing, serving Manchester since 2004" tells a visitor very little that helps them decide to call you.

"Emergency plumber in Manchester, available today" tells them exactly what they need to know if they have water pouring through their ceiling right now.

Good conversion copy is specific. It addresses the visitor's situation, names their problem, and makes it completely obvious what they should do next. Vague, generic copy is one of the biggest reasons websites generate traffic but no enquiries.

This is an area where working with a team that understands both web design and lead generation makes a real difference. Getting the words right is not separate from the design work. They have to work together.

Your Contact Form Is in the Wrong Place

Even if everything else is working, a poorly placed or poorly designed contact form will kill your conversion rate.

The most common mistake is putting the contact form only on the contact page. A visitor lands on your homepage, reads a bit, gets interested, and then has to go hunting for where to actually get in touch. That friction matters. Every extra click is an opportunity for someone to change their mind.

High-converting websites put a clear call to action above the fold on the homepage. They repeat it throughout the page. They make the form short, with only the fields that are genuinely necessary. Name, email, phone, a brief message. That is usually enough to start a conversation.

If your form asks for more than five pieces of information before someone has even spoken to you, you are losing people. The goal of the form is not to gather a complete brief. It is to start a conversation.

Another thing worth checking: does your form actually work? You would be surprised how often a form has been broken for weeks or months and the business owner has no idea. Send yourself a test submission right now and confirm it lands in your inbox.

You Have Not Given Visitors a Reason to Trust You

Suppose someone finds your website through Google. They have never heard of you. They have no existing relationship with your business. They are comparing you against several other options they have open in different tabs.

What on your website tells them that you are the right choice?

Trust signals are the elements that close that gap. They include genuine client testimonials with real names and ideally real photos. Case studies that show a before and after. Recognisable logos of companies you have worked with. Professional photography rather than generic stock images. Clear information about who you are and where you are based.

Many small business websites skip these entirely, either because they feel awkward asking for reviews or because they think the work speaks for itself. It does not speak for itself online. Visitors cannot see the work in person. They can only see what you show them.

Recent data shows that a large proportion of consumers read online reviews before making a purchase or enquiry decision. Failing to surface that social proof on your website is leaving a significant conversion lever completely unused.

At Salter Socials, we build trust signal frameworks into every website project. That means thinking strategically about what evidence to show, where to place it, and how to present it in a way that feels credible rather than forced.

The Problem Is Usually Not One Thing

Here is the honest reality. Most websites that are not generating enquiries have more than one of these issues at play simultaneously. Slow load speed, weak copy, a buried contact form, no testimonials, and a mobile experience that falls apart. They stack on top of each other and the cumulative effect is a website that looks fine but converts no one.

Fixing just one of them will move the needle a little. Fixing all of them changes the picture entirely.

The businesses that see the biggest improvement are the ones that treat their website as a lead generation system rather than a digital brochure. A brochure sits there and looks nice. A system is designed from the start to turn visitors into enquiries, with every element working toward that outcome.

That is exactly what we build at Salter Socials. Whether you are a sole trader looking to get your first consistent flow of leads online, or an established business that knows your current site is underperforming, we can identify what is broken and build something that actually works.
