Why Your Website Is Not Getting Enquiries (And Exactly How to Fix It)

Most business owners who come to us say the same thing. They built a website, maybe spent decent money on it, and then waited. A few visitors trickled in. Nobody got in touch. So they assumed they needed more traffic, ran some ads, got a small spike, and then went quiet again. The ads were not the problem. The website was.

If you are asking why is my website not getting enquiries, you are not alone. It is one of the most common frustrations we hear from business owners across the UK and USA. And in almost every case, the issue is not the volume of traffic. It is what happens to that traffic once it lands on the site.

This post walks you through the five most common reasons your website is not converting visitors into enquiries, and what to do about each one.

1. Your Proposition Is Not Clear Enough

When someone lands on your website, they make a decision within seconds. Not minutes. Seconds. If they cannot immediately understand what you do, who you do it for, and why they should care, they leave.

This is not about having fancy copy. It is about clarity. Look at your homepage right now and ask yourself: could a complete stranger read the first two lines and know exactly what you offer and who it is for?

Most business websites fail this test. They lead with vague statements like "delivering excellence" or "solutions for your business" without ever saying what the business actually does. If your headline could belong to any company in any industry, it is not doing its job.

The fix: Rewrite your main headline to answer three questions at once. What do you do? Who do you help? What outcome do they get? A roofing company might say: "We fix leaking roofs across Manchester. Fast quotes, no mess, guaranteed work." That is not glamorous. But it converts.

2. There Is No Visible Call to Action

This one sounds obvious, but it is staggering how many websites bury their contact details or make it genuinely difficult to take the next step. A visitor who is ready to enquire should never have to hunt for a way to reach you.

Your call to action needs to appear in the right places at the right time. That means above the fold on your homepage, at the end of every service page, and ideally in a sticky header or footer that follows the user as they scroll. It should also be specific. "Get a Free Quote" performs better than "Contact Us" because it tells the visitor exactly what they are getting.

The fix: Audit every page on your website and ask: what do I want the visitor to do next, and is that action clearly signposted? If the answer is not immediately obvious, that page is leaking potential enquiries.

3. Your Website Is Too Slow on Mobile

Here is a fact that should focus the mind: more than half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your site loads slowly on a phone, you are losing a significant chunk of potential enquiries before those visitors even see your offer.

Page speed is not just a technical concern. It directly affects how long someone stays on your site and how likely they are to take action. Research consistently shows that conversion rates drop sharply for every additional second a page takes to load. A site that takes four or five seconds to load on mobile is quietly haemorrhaging enquiries every single day.

Google's own data confirms that 53% of mobile users will abandon a site that takes longer than three seconds to load. That is more than half your potential audience gone before they have read a single word.

The fix: Test your website using Google PageSpeed Insights. If your mobile score is below 80, it needs attention. Common culprits include uncompressed images, too many plugins, and poorly coded themes. A developer can usually address these issues and make a significant difference to both speed and conversion rate.

4. Your Website Has Weak Trust Signals

People do not enquire with businesses they do not trust. And online, trust has to be built quickly, because you are not in the room with them. Your website needs to do the work of establishing credibility before someone is willing to hand over their details or pick up the phone.

Weak trust signals are more common than most business owners realise. No reviews or testimonials on the site. No photos of real people or real work. A generic stock photo of a handshake on the homepage. No mention of how long the business has been operating. These are all signals that make a visitor hesitate.

Recent data from BrightLocal found that 98% of consumers read online reviews before making a purchase decision. If your website does not prominently feature reviews, case studies, or social proof of any kind, you are asking visitors to take a leap of faith that most of them will not take.

The fix: Add genuine testimonials to your homepage and service pages. Include a photo of the person giving the review wherever possible. If you have case studies, publish them. If you have accreditations, trade memberships, or industry certifications, make them visible. These details matter more than most business owners give them credit for.

5. There Is No Follow-Up Mechanism

This is the one that costs businesses the most in lost revenue, and it is almost always invisible to the business owner because it happens after the visitor leaves the site.

Most people who visit your website are not ready to enquire the first time they land on it. They are researching. They are comparing. They might come back in a week, or they might never come back at all, because they forgot about you and found someone else. If your website has no mechanism to stay in front of those visitors, you are relying entirely on them to remember you, and they will not.

A follow-up mechanism can take several forms. A lead magnet that captures an email address in exchange for something useful. A retargeting pixel that shows your ads to people who have already visited your site. An email sequence that nurtures enquiries over time rather than expecting an immediate decision. Any of these, done properly, can recover a significant proportion of visitors who would otherwise disappear.

The fix: Start with the simplest option. Add a lead capture form to your website that offers something genuinely useful in exchange for an email address. A checklist, a short guide, a free audit. Then follow up with a short email sequence that provides value and reminds them why they visited in the first place. This does not need to be complicated to work.

Why This Matters More Than You Might Think

These five issues are not small inconveniences. Combined, they represent a significant loss of potential revenue for any business that relies on its website to generate enquiries. And because most of the damage happens silently, in the gap between someone landing on your site and deciding to leave without getting in touch, business owners often do not realise how much they are losing.

The good news is that none of these problems are unfixable. In most cases, addressing two or three of them can double or triple the number of enquiries a website generates without increasing traffic at all.

That is what makes this worth taking seriously. You may already have enough visitors coming to your site. The work is in converting more of them.
