Why Your Website Gets Traffic But No Enquiries — And How to Fix It

Most business owners assume that if their website is getting traffic, the leads will follow. They check Google Analytics, see the visitors coming in, and wait. Nothing happens. So they assume they need more traffic. They run some ads, maybe boost a social post, and still the phone stays quiet. The traffic was never the problem. If you are trying to work out how to increase the number of enquiries from your website, the answer is almost never more visitors. It is what happens to those visitors once they arrive.

This post breaks down exactly why the gap between traffic and enquiries exists, and what you can do about it today.

Your Headline Is Not Doing Its Job

The first thing a visitor sees when they land on your website is your headline. In most cases, that headline says something like "Welcome to [Business Name]" or "Professional Services in [Town]". Neither of those tells a visitor what you do, who you do it for, or why they should care.

You have roughly three to five seconds before a visitor decides whether to stay or leave. That is not enough time for someone to explore your site and figure out if you can help them. Your headline needs to do that work instantly.

A strong headline is specific. Instead of "Accountants in Manchester", try "We help Manchester-based trades businesses keep more of what they earn". Instead of "Web Design Services", try "Websites that turn visitors into paying customers". The difference sounds small. The impact on enquiries is not.

There Is No Clear Next Step

This is the most common problem we see. A business has a decent-looking website with a services page, an about page, and a contact form buried somewhere in the menu. The visitor reads a bit, nods along, and then has no idea what to do next.

Every page on your website should have one clear call to action. Not five options. One. Whether that is booking a call, requesting a quote, or downloading a guide, the visitor should never have to think about what happens next. It should be obvious, it should be repeated, and it should be easy to complete.

If your contact form asks for twelve pieces of information, most people will not fill it in. If your phone number is only in the footer, most people will not look for it. Remove the friction. Make it effortless to get in touch.

Your Site Is Slow and It Is Costing You Leads

Page speed is not a technical detail to worry about later. It is a conversion issue right now. Research shows that 53% of mobile users will abandon a website if it takes longer than three seconds to load. That means more than half your mobile visitors could be leaving before they have seen a single word you have written.

A PageSpeed score below 70 on mobile is a problem. Many business websites are sitting in the 50s and 60s without their owners knowing. Large uncompressed images, bloated plugins, and poor hosting all drag that number down. Every second of load time you add increases the chance a visitor leaves and contacts your competitor instead.

If you have not checked your PageSpeed score recently, do it now. Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool will show you exactly where the issues are.

The Mobile Experience Is an Afterthought

More than half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices. Yet most websites are still designed on a desktop and then scaled down, resulting in tiny text, buttons that are hard to tap, and forms that are painful to fill in on a phone screen.

A visitor browsing your site on their phone while making a cup of tea is not going to persevere with a broken layout. They will leave. Your mobile experience needs to be as clean and easy to use as your desktop version, and in some industries, it needs to be better.

Check your own site on your phone right now. Can you read the text without zooming in? Can you tap the call to action button without hitting something else by accident? Is the phone number clickable so they can call you in one tap? If the answer to any of those is no, you are losing enquiries every day.

You Have Not Given Visitors a Reason to Trust You

Most people visiting your website for the first time know nothing about you. They found you through a search, an ad, or a recommendation. Before they pick up the phone or fill in a form, they want to know that you are credible and that other people have had a good experience with you.

Social proof is what bridges that gap. Reviews, case studies, client logos, before and after examples, testimonials with real names and photos. These are not nice-to-haves. They are a core part of converting visitors into enquiries.

According to recent data, 93% of consumers say online reviews influence their buying decisions. If your website has no visible evidence that real people have used and trusted your business, you are asking visitors to take a leap of faith. Most will not.

Put your best testimonials on your homepage. Do not hide them on a separate reviews page. Show them early, show them prominently, and make sure they are specific. "Great service" is weak. "They delivered our new website in three weeks and we had our first enquiry within 48 hours" is what moves people.

Your Website Is Talking About You Instead of the Visitor

This one is subtle but it matters. Read through your website copy and count how many times it uses the words "we", "our", and "us" compared to "you" and "your". Most business websites talk almost entirely about themselves. Their history, their team, their accreditations.

Visitors do not arrive at your website thinking about you. They arrive thinking about their problem. They want to know if you understand what they are dealing with and whether you can fix it. Copy that speaks directly to the visitor's situation converts better than copy that lists your credentials.

Start with the problem. Show you understand it. Then explain how you solve it. Then give them a clear next step. That structure works across every industry and every type of service.

Your Traffic Sources May Be Sending the Wrong People

Sometimes the issue is not the website at all. Sometimes the traffic coming in is simply not the right kind. Broad, untargeted traffic from generic keywords or poorly targeted ads will always convert at a low rate because many of those visitors were never going to buy from you.

If your website sells commercial cleaning services in Birmingham and you are getting traffic from people searching for DIY cleaning tips, no amount of conversion optimisation will fix that. Quality of traffic matters as much as quantity. A hundred highly targeted visitors will always outperform a thousand vague ones.

Look at which pages visitors are landing on, how long they are staying, and where they are dropping off. That data tells you a lot about whether you have a traffic problem or a conversion problem.

How Salter Socials Helps Businesses Fix This

We work with businesses across the UK and USA who are in exactly this position. Their website exists, it gets traffic, and it does not generate enquiries consistently. The reasons are almost always a combination of the issues above.

When we build or rebuild a website, conversion is the starting point. Not aesthetics, not features. We structure every page around a clear user journey, write copy that speaks to the visitor's real situation, and make sure the technical foundation is solid. Fast load times, clean mobile experience, strong calls to action, and visible social proof are not optional extras. They are the baseline.

Beyond the website, we build the lead generation systems that sit behind it. Because getting an enquiry is step one. Having a structured process to follow up and convert that enquiry into a customer is what actually grows a business.

If your website is getting traffic but not delivering the enquiries you expected, the fix is almost always simpler than you think. It does not require starting from scratch or a complete redesign. Often it is a handful of targeted changes that shift the numbers significantly.
