Most business owners who come to us have the same problem. They built a website, paid good money for it, and now it just sits there. People land on it. The analytics show traffic. But the phone does not ring and the inbox stays empty. If that sounds familiar, the issue is almost never your product or service. The issue is that your website is not built to convert visitors into enquiries. Learning how to increase website enquiries is not about a full redesign or a bigger ad budget. It is about making targeted, conversion-focused changes that give visitors a reason to take action. Here are nine of them.
1. Put Your Call to Action Where People Actually Look
Most websites bury the call to action at the bottom of the page or hide it in a navigation menu. That is a guaranteed way to lose enquiries. Your primary CTA needs to be visible above the fold, meaning the user should see it without scrolling at all.
For a service business, that means something like "Get a Free Quote" or "Book a Call" sitting prominently in the hero section of your homepage. Not a vague "Learn More" button. A specific, benefit-led prompt that tells the visitor exactly what happens next.
If someone has to hunt for a way to contact you, they will not bother.
2. Make Your Contact Form Shorter
Long contact forms kill enquiries. Every extra field you add is another reason for someone to close the tab. Ask for the minimum information you need to have a useful first conversation: name, email, and one or two qualifying questions at most.
If your form is asking for company size, budget range, job title, and a detailed project description before you have even spoken to the person, you are asking for too much too soon. Strip it back. You can gather more information once the conversation has started.
3. Place Your Contact Form on More Pages
Your contact form should not live exclusively on your Contact page. Most visitors never make it there. They land on a service page, read what you offer, and then leave because there is nothing on that page encouraging them to take the next step.
Add a short contact form or a clear CTA button to every key service page, your About page, and your blog posts. The easier you make it for someone to enquire at the exact moment they are most engaged, the more enquiries you will get.
4. Fix Your Page Speed
Page speed is not a technical vanity metric. It directly affects how many people stay on your site long enough to enquire. A slow website loses visitors before they have even read a single word.
Research consistently shows that pages loading in under two seconds convert significantly better than those taking four seconds or more. On mobile, where a large proportion of UK website traffic now comes from, the gap is even more pronounced. Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights and act on what it tells you. Compress images, reduce unnecessary plugins, and make sure your hosting is not dragging everything down.
5. Add Real Trust Signals
Visitors who do not trust you will not contact you. Trust signals are the elements on your website that prove you are a legitimate, competent business worth dealing with. They include:
- Genuine client testimonials with full names and ideally photos
- Case studies or before-and-after results that show real outcomes
- Logos of clients or partners you have worked with
- Accreditations, memberships, or awards relevant to your industry
- A physical address and a real phone number, not just a web form
Many small business websites skip these entirely or use generic stock testimonials that nobody believes. Specific, verifiable social proof is one of the highest-impact changes you can make to increase enquiry volume.
6. Rewrite Your Headlines to Focus on the Outcome
The headline on your homepage is doing more work than any other piece of text on your site. If it leads with your company name or a vague statement like "Welcome to our website," you are wasting the most valuable space you have.
Your headline should immediately communicate what you do, who you do it for, and what result the visitor can expect. "We help UK tradespeople get more local leads without relying on word of mouth" is a headline that speaks directly to a specific audience. "Quality Services for All Your Needs" tells the visitor nothing and converts nobody.
Lead with the outcome your customer wants, not the service you provide.
7. Show a Real Human Behind the Business
People buy from people. A website with no photos of the team, no names, and no personality feels like it could belong to anyone or no one. That ambiguity creates doubt, and doubt stops people from making contact.
Adding a short About section with real photos of the people behind the business, a brief explanation of why you started, and what makes you different does more for enquiry rates than most business owners expect. It removes the anonymity and gives the visitor someone to trust before they even pick up the phone.
8. Use Click-to-Call on Mobile
If a significant portion of your visitors are on mobile, and they are, your phone number needs to be tappable. A phone number that is just displayed as text on a mobile device is a missed enquiry every single time.
Make sure your number is formatted as a clickable link on mobile so someone can call you with a single tap. This is a five-minute technical fix that can produce an immediate lift in inbound calls, particularly for service businesses where customers want to speak to someone quickly.
9. Track What Is Actually Happening
You cannot improve what you are not measuring. Many business owners have no idea which pages their enquiries are coming from, how long visitors spend on the site, or at which point people are leaving. Without that data, every change you make is a guess.
Set up Google Analytics 4 if you have not already, and configure goal tracking so you can see every time someone submits a contact form or clicks your phone number. Once you know where the drop-off is happening, you can fix the right thing rather than the wrong one.
Recent data shows that businesses actively tracking and optimising their conversion points consistently outperform those making changes based on gut feeling alone. The difference between a website that generates enquiries and one that does not is rarely one big thing. It is usually several small things working together.
Why Most Websites Fail to Generate Enquiries
The honest answer is that most websites are built to look good rather than to perform. The design process focuses on colours, fonts, and images. The conversion process, where a visitor becomes an enquiry, is treated as an afterthought.
A well-designed website and a high-converting website are not the same thing. A site can be visually impressive and still produce nothing in terms of leads. The fixes above are specifically about the gap between attracting visitors and turning them into contacts. None of them require a full rebuild. Many can be implemented in a matter of days.
If you have gone through this list and realised your website has six or seven of these problems, that is actually good news. It means the opportunity to increase enquiries is sitting right in front of you, and the improvements are entirely within reach.
How Salter Socials Can Help
At Salter Socials, we build websites and lead generation systems specifically designed to convert. We do not just make sites that look the part. We build them around the goal of generating real enquiries from real potential customers.
Whether you need a full web design project that starts from scratch with conversion at the centre, or you want us to audit your existing site and identify exactly what is costing you enquiries, we can help.
We work with businesses across the UK and USA, from sole traders and local service companies through to larger organisations looking to build scalable lead generation into their digital presence.
If your website is getting traffic but not generating enquiries, something on it is not working. The changes above are a strong starting point, but sometimes the fastest way forward is having someone who does this every day take a proper look.
