Most service businesses that come to us have a traffic problem they mistake for a marketing problem. They are getting visitors to their website, maybe running some ads on the side, and still watching the phone stay quiet. The issue is rarely that nobody wants what they sell. The issue is that the path from "I found you" to "I want to work with you" is broken somewhere. Knowing how to get more enquiries is not about doing more. It is about fixing the right things in the right order.
Here are eight changes that actually move the needle.
1. Fix Your Contact Page First
Most contact pages are an afterthought. A generic form, a phone number, and a map nobody asked for. That is not enough. Your contact page should do three things: remind the visitor why they should get in touch, make the process feel easy, and remove any doubt that they will hear back.
Add a short paragraph above the form that tells people what happens after they submit it. Something like: "We will reply within one working day to arrange a free 20-minute call." That one change alone reduces drop-off on contact forms significantly.
2. Put a Clear Call to Action Above the Fold
If someone lands on your homepage and cannot see an obvious next step within five seconds, most of them will leave. Above the fold means the part of the page visible before you scroll. Your main call to action needs to be there, not buried halfway down the page after three paragraphs about your company history.
One button. One action. Make it specific. "Get a Free Quote" outperforms "Contact Us" almost every time because it sets an expectation rather than asking for a vague commitment.
3. Add Social Proof Where It Actually Gets Seen
Reviews and testimonials are only useful if they appear at the moment someone is deciding whether to trust you. That means they belong on your homepage, your service pages, and your contact page. Not tucked away on a separate testimonials tab that nobody visits.
The placement matters as much as the proof itself. A testimonial directly above your contact form gives the visitor a final reason to submit. A case study on your service page answers the question "has this worked for people like me?" before it gets asked.
4. Speed Up Your Website
A slow website kills enquiries before they start. Visitors will not wait. If your pages take more than three seconds to load on mobile, a substantial portion of your potential customers have already left and gone to a competitor.
Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights. If your mobile score is below 70, that is a priority fix, not a nice-to-have. Common culprits are uncompressed images, bloated plugins, and cheap hosting. Sorting these out is often one of the highest-return technical improvements a business can make.
5. Follow Up Faster
Speed of response is one of the most overlooked factors in converting enquiries. Research consistently shows that responding to a lead within five minutes makes you dramatically more likely to have a meaningful conversation with them than if you wait an hour. By the time 24 hours have passed, many leads have already chosen someone else.
If you cannot respond personally within minutes, set up an automated acknowledgement that confirms receipt and tells the person what happens next. Even that small step keeps the lead warm while you get back to them properly.
6. Create a Lead Magnet That Earns Email Addresses
Not every visitor is ready to enquire the first time they find you. A lead magnet gives you a way to stay in touch with the people who are interested but not yet ready. This could be a short guide, a checklist, a free audit, or a template that is genuinely useful to your target customer.
The goal is not to collect email addresses for the sake of it. The goal is to give yourself a legitimate reason to follow up, demonstrate expertise, and stay front of mind until they are ready to buy. Businesses that capture emails and nurture them with relevant content consistently generate more enquiries over time than those relying entirely on immediate conversions.
7. Show Up in Local Search
If your business serves a specific area, local SEO is one of the most cost-effective ways to generate enquiries from people who are actively looking for what you do. Start with your Google Business Profile. Make sure it is fully filled out, that your categories are accurate, and that you are actively collecting reviews from real customers.
Beyond that, make sure your website mentions the areas you serve. Not in a spammy list of towns, but naturally within your service pages and homepage copy. Local search intent is high-commercial intent. Someone searching for "plumber in Bristol" or "accountant in Manchester" is not browsing. They are looking to hire.
8. Make Your Offer Specific and Risk-Free
Vague offers generate vague results. "We provide marketing services" tells the visitor almost nothing about why they should choose you or what they will get. A specific offer, with a clear outcome and a low barrier to entry, converts far better.
This might look like a free 30-minute strategy call, a no-obligation quote, or a free website audit. Whatever it is, it should be easy to say yes to and it should signal confidence in what you deliver. When you remove the risk from the first step, more people take it.
What Most Businesses Get Wrong
The problem is rarely a single thing. It is usually several small friction points stacked on top of each other. A slow website. A vague call to action. No follow-up system. No social proof in the right place. Individually, each one costs you a handful of enquiries. Together, they can cut your lead flow in half.
The businesses that consistently generate strong enquiry volumes are not necessarily spending more on advertising. They have built a system where every part of the journey, from first click to first conversation, has been thought through and optimised.
That is a different way of thinking about marketing. And it is one that pays off repeatedly, not just while an ad is running.
Rather Have Someone Build This for You?
If you have read through this list and thought "I know I need to do this, but I do not have the time or the team to make it happen," that is exactly the situation we work with every day at Salter Socials.
We build websites and lead generation systems for businesses across the UK and USA. Not just websites that look good, but systems designed from the ground up to turn visitors into enquiries. That means the right structure, the right messaging, the right follow-up, and the right tracking so you can see what is working.
You do not need to implement all eight of these changes yourself. You need them implemented properly, once, so they start working for you without the trial and error.
If you want to find out what a lead generation system could look like for your business, get in touch with the team at Salter Socials. We will take a look at what you have got, tell you what we think is holding your enquiries back, and talk through what we can do about it.
